You’ve probably seen this before. You feel anxious before an important meeting, and then your stomach is hurting. Perhaps you’re extremely stressed and you experience a pounding headache. It’s not an accident. Your body and your mind are interconnected in ways that most people don’t even think about.

What Does Mind-Body Connection Actually Mean?

It’s fairly simple. The activity that happens inside your head can affect your body. What happens inside your body impacts your head. Let me provide you with an example. Have you ever needed to deliver a speech or perform something terrifying? Your palms got sweaty. Your heart started racing. You might have felt sick in your stomach. There was no instruction for your body to behave that way. Your brain performed it automatically. A similar thing happens when you’re suffering from pain or are exhausted. You get cranky. It’s difficult to think clearly. Your body’s health condition can alter your mood as well as your ability to concentrate. The mind-body connection is functioning in both directions.

Your Thoughts Create Real Physical Changes

If you are thinking about things that make you feel happy, your brain releases certain chemical substances. If you are thinking about something stressful, your brain releases different chemicals. These chemicals move through your entire body and trigger reactions. Are you stressed out? Your muscles are likely to be in a tight position without even realizing. You may grind your teeth late at night. Your blood pressure could increase. Continue to increase it for years or months, and you may be faced with serious health problems. Problems with digestion, headaches or heart issues – all from a thought that will not stop. Positive thoughts, however, have the opposite effect. People who view things with a positive perspective tend to be healthier. If they do fall sick, they recover more quickly. Their bodies are actually working better. The mind-body connection doesn’t revolve only around stress that can make you sick. It’s as important to know how your mental state keeps you fit and healthy.

Stress Messes You Up

This is the most important one. Stress shows exactly how the mind-body connection functions. The body has this ancient way of dealing with threats. When humans first saw the wild animal and their bodies would scream into the highest speed. The heart was pumping, muscles were ready and all systems are in motion. This helped them fight or flee. This is the issue. The body does this. It happens, however, when you get the boss’s angry message or when you realize that you didn’t pay a bill. Your body isn’t able to tell whether it’s a genuine threat or just the normal life of frustrating. You’re out and about with your stress response turned constantly. It wears you down. You can’t sleep right. The stomach is in a state of chaos. You’re more susceptible to getting sick since you immune system active in tackling fake crises. The thing is, it all begins with what you’re thinking about things. The scenario may be real but your thoughts on it will flip the switch.

Where Do You Feel Your Feelings?

Did you notice that anger is differently than sadness? It’s not just emotional. Physically. When you’re upset and your jaw is clenched, you tighten it. You tighten your fists. The whole body gets tense as if you’re ready to fight. If you’re depressed, the chest gets heavy. You might cry. Your entire body begins to sag. The stomach aches with fear. Excitement makes your heart race. Every emotion is manifested within your body. This is the mind-body connection at work. Here’s what many people aren’t aware of. If you’re not able to deal with your emotions, they linger throughout your body. It is possible to bury your anger for a while and end up with that perpetual tension in your neck that will not go away. It’s difficult to deal with your grief, and find yourself with that tightness in your chest, which appears like a heart condition, but it’s not. Doctors observe this every day. Patients present with discomfort or other signs However, all tests show no abnormality. It turns out that it’s the emotions that were never processed. Your body’s trying to communicate with you about something.

What You Believe Makes a Difference

If you’re thinking you’re someone who is sick every day, guess what? Most likely, you do. If you believe you’re strong and healthy, it helps too. It sounds like a new age fad but it’s true. What you think about your health is what actually affects it. It’s not because of the power of magic. Due to the mind-body connection. Your beliefs influence the way you behave. They affect how you view the signs. They can also affect the way your immune system functions. Scientists have demonstrated this. If you give people an e-liquid and tell them that it’s a medicine, and lots of them will improve. This is their brain telling their body that it’s time to recover. It’s the same in reverse. If you’re certain that nothing can aid you, treatment options won’t perform as well. Negative thoughts can cause negative effects on your body.

Sleep Problems Go Both Ways

Can’t sleep? Your mental health suffers. You are stressed. Every thing irritates you. You’re unable to focus for an ounce. However, if you’re already worried or depressed, it can disrupt your sleep. Your brain won’t shut up. Your body isn’t able to relax. You lay there, staring up at the ceiling. You’re stuck. Sleeping poorly makes your mind more irritable. Unbalanced thoughts can disrupt your sleep. The cycle continues. You must tackle both sides at the same time. Reset your thoughts and let your body relax. Rest your body, and let your mind will settle.

Pain Gets Weird

Pain can indeed be real. However, how much is it hurting? That will depend on your thoughts. Two people suffer similar injuries. One person is scared and is worried about that it’s the most horrible thing could happen. The other person is at peace. One who panics is more likely to hurt. The mind-body connection increases the pain signals. Chronic pain can be even more bizarre. The initial injury may heal but the pain remains. The nervous system is stuck and sends pain signals. Your brain keeps the process going, even although there’s nothing wrong with it. Change the way you think about it could help to lessen the pain. Pain is fake or it’s just a figment of your imagination. It’s real. However, your mind has greater control over what you feel about it than you’d imagine.

What You Can Actually Do About This

Understanding the mind-body connection is wonderful; however, what do you do to make use of it? Here are some suggestions that actually does the trick. Breathe more deeply in times of stress. Your body’s slow breathing signals it to relax. It’s not difficult, but it does work. Move around. Exercise alters the brain’s chemistry. You feel more positive physically and mentally at the same time. Make a list of things you’re grateful for. It sounds like a cliché, but it actually alters the way you think in your brain. Lower stress hormones, improved functioning of your immune system. Be aware of the thoughts you’re telling yourself. If you find yourself being adamant that “I always get sick” or “I’m falling apart,” look for something more subtle. You don’t need to fake positive. There’s no need to be gloomy and doom. Let your feelings be known. Chat with someone. Write about the conversation. Punch an object. Whatever. Keep everything in a closed container. Sleep must be an absolute priority. Not optional. Your body and your mind require it.

Why Does Any of This Matter

When you realize that your body and mind are interconnected and are connected, you cease treating them as separate entities. Being mindful of your health in mind is caring for your body’s health. There aren’t two jobs that can be done in the same way. It is impossible to ignore your feelings or thoughts or expect that your body will work fine. It’s impossible to ignore your body or expect it to be working properly. They’re part of a team. The good news is that you’re not in a position of being helpless. You can’t manage everything that affects your health. But your thoughts, opinions, and how you manage your emotions–all of these are important. All of them affect the way your physical sensations. Pay attention to the connection and you could take action to improve it. Your brain is talking to your body all day. Your body is speaking back. Perhaps you should begin to listen.
